Seva Mandal Education Society (SMES) established in 1957 believes in the principle that Educate a man and you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate the entire family! SMES has always been a pioneer in the field of women’s education starting colleges and courses as per the demands of society and providing women students a wide choice of courses. SMES runs seven colleges in the Smt. ParmeshwarideviGordhandasGarodia Educational Complex:

The Graduate, Post Graduate and Diploma level programmes are housed in the 4 buildings on the campus:

  • Smt. Maniben M.P. Shah Women’s College of Arts and Commerce building
  • Smt. Bhanuben Mahindra Nanavati College of Home Science
  • Smt. KamalabenGambhirchand Shah Educational Complex and
  • VasantbenVadilal Shah Annex Building.

Important Milestones

1957

Gujarati Seva Mandal tutored 7 students to appear for SNDT Women’s University examinations

1958

College received affiliation from SNDT Women’s University- first College in Maharashtra to be affiliated to SNDT Women’s University

1971

Construction of College building started. College named as Smt. Maniben M.P. Shah Women’s College of Arts & Commerce. A handsome donation of Rs. 4 lakhs received from the MeghjiPethraj Shah Charitable Trust

1973

Inauguration of the present College building by the then President of India, Honorable Shri V.V. Giri.

1978

Shri M.P. Shah Junior College of Arts & Commerce for Women was added after receiving a further donation of Rs. 2 lakhs.
Commerce programme introduced

1984

Sociology, Psychology and Hindi were introduced as Discipline Components in Arts Faculty with English as the medium of instruction. Interdisciplinary Component- Combined Applied subjects- Home-Economics and Commerce introduced in Arts Faculty

1991

BA with Marathi as a medium of instruction was introduced. Marathi and Sociology offered as the Discipline components

1994

UGC Vocational Courses in Computer Applications, Office management and Advertising and Sales Promotion were started. The College was the first amongst all SNDT Women’s University Colleges to start these programmes.

2002

First College under SNDT Women’s University to introduce Self-financing Graduate programme in Management Studies under the Smt. KamalabenGambhirchand Shah Department of Management Studies, offering specialization in Finance, Human Resource and Marketing.

2003

College undergoes NAAC accreditation-1st Cycle with a B+ Grade

2004

College becomes a Centre for Post Graduate Studies with MA in Counselling Psychology and MCom in Marketing Management as specializations

2006

First college to introduce Degree Programme in Mass Media (BAMM) under Smt. KamalabenGambhirchand Shah Department of Mass Media

2010

Post Graduate Programme in Hindi launched

2013

College undergoes NAAC accreditation-2nd Cycle with AGrade and CGPA of 3.61/4

2014

BCom with Accounts, Finance and Insurance – self-financing was introduced

2015

College collaborated with Mahatma Gandhi Antarashtriya Hindi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Wardha to offer Degree, PG and PG Diploma Courses in the Distance Education mode

2016

Received College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) status from academic year 2016 - 2017 to 2020 - 2021

2017

BA with Economics as the Discipline Component in English medium introduced MCom with additional specialization in Advanced Accountancy introduced

2017

Adjudged as Best College 2017 – 18 by SNDT Women’s University

2019

Conferred with Autonomous Status from June 2019.

2019

College has undergone 3rd Cycle of NAAC accreditation- with ‘B++’ Grade and CGPA of 2.88/4 in new format of NAAC
