The SNDT Women’s University Re-accredited by NAAC with ‘A Grade’ was founded by Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, who dedicated his life to the noble cause of
uplifting Women by giving them proper education. The University was established in 1916 and was named Shrimati Nathibai Damodar Thakersey Women’s University (SNDTWU).
In 1936 the university head office was shifted to Mumbai. The motto of the University is “SanskrutastreeParashakti”which means “An Enlightened Woman is a source of
Infinite Strength”. In 1951, the University succeeded acquiring statutory recognition from the Government of Maharashtra. The university has 170 affiliated colleges in Maharashtra,
Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and has more than 70,000 students on roll in liberal & professional programmes.
It is the only women’s university in India which runs variety of programmes exclusively for women. The University completed its Centenary year on 5th July, 2016.
